Users build node-based automation workflows on a drag-and-drop canvas, deploy them to managed device fleets (Android, Apple, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS), and manage resources like app policies and device profiles. Currently a frontend-only React/TypeScript prototype with localStorage persistence. Tags: canvas, mdm, workflows ### Logs Explorer — Dashboards · 2025 · Professional A focused logs and observability surface designed to help on-call engineers triage incidents and surface patterns across noisy systems. Tags: enterprise, dashboards, web ### Foundation — Enterprise · 2026 · Professional Foundation is a B2B SaaS enterprise admin UI for SOTI ONE — a unified control plane for managing tenants, users, and permissions across SOTI products. Built with React 18, TypeScript, Tailwind v4, and shadcn/ui, it features 5 personas, a feature-gating registry, RBAC explorer, dashboard, member management, and settings. Currently a design prototype with mocked data. I worked on a small team shaping product strategy, field research, and 30+ features over 2 years. The app helps businesses manage and monitor ad campaigns across Meta platforms and was the first app built with React Native. Tags: mobile ### Figure 1 — Mobile App · 2016 – 2018 · Professional A medical knowledge-sharing platform helping healthcare professionals learn from real cases at the point of care. Tags: mobile, iOS, android ### Tumblr — Mobile App · 2012 · Professional At Nascent, I pitched Microsoft to win the opportunity to build the official Tumblr app for Windows Phone 8. As part of a small team I led design strategy and visual design, working with Tumblr to translate their Apple award-winning iOS app into something that actually felt native to Windows Phone — panoramic navigation, Live Tiles, oversized typography, and all. A rare case of a social app willingly embracing Metro instead of pretending it was iOS in disguise. Tags: mobile ## Personal projects ### Signal — SaaS App · 2026 · Personal Signal helps software teams make hiring decisions faster by replacing post-interview chaos with structured signal collection, Slack-native feedback, and automated decision orchestration. The idea came from a simple observation: candidates rarely fail because of process visibility alone. Instead of rigid hiring pipelines, Signal adapts to each company's hiring philosophy through customizable evaluation dimensions and decision thresholds. Trainers get a review-and-approve app while AI agents handle scheduling, payments, client outreach, and program adjustments automatically. Clients get a lightweight app for sessions, progress, and billing. Built on Next.js + TypeScript with a full MCP server so trainers' own AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT) can plug in directly. Tags: web, app, mobile, platform, ai, fitness ### Memory Game — Game · 2025 · Personal A memory game using trivia from Marvel characters Tags: game ### Workouts App — Mobile App · 2025 · Personal A hybrid AI fitness platform that combines hosted and on-device LLMs to deliver deeply personalized workout programming. The system uses a structured exercise library, training templates, and rule-based adaptation engine to generate long-term plans that intelligently adjust for injuries, missed workouts, equipment limits, fatigue, schedule changes, and evolving goals—without losing the integrity of the overall program. Tags: app, mobile, ai, fitness ### TL;DR — App · 2025 · Personal TL;DR started from a personal frustration: knowing who I am and how I like to work, but struggling to articulate it clearly in the moment. It's a personal reflection system that captures thoughts over time, organizes them into themes, beliefs, motivations, and contradictions, and helps generate clear, shareable summaries about who you are and how you work best. Tags: bio ### Tab Death — Chrome Extension · 2025 · Personal Tab Death is a Chrome extension for people (like yours truly) using browser tabs as an emotional support system. Instead of pretending you'll "read this later," it captures why a tab mattered at close-time, then lets it decay with dignity. Built with MV3, TypeScript, Dexie/IndexedDB, and a composable event-driven architecture, it's optimized for performance, privacy, and future sync support. Forgetting is treated as a feature, not a bug. Tags: tool, extension ### Money Journal — App · 2025 · Personal A tablet-first finance app for kids who somehow have cash hidden in six different places at all times. Track money manually, move it between locations, and save toward goals with calm visuals and subtle motion. No banks, budgets, chores, mascots, or gamified dopamine extraction. Just a surprisingly elegant ledger for tiny humans with poor accounting practices. Tags: app, fun ### Serv — App Concept · 2019 · Personal Restaurant feedback is broken: comment cards die in pockets, apps go uninstalled, and praise rarely reaches the server who earned it. serv replaces all three with one QR sticker pulling triple duty — customers scan from their phone (no install) and get an instant discount for venting; servers scan the same sticker to claim a shift and bind feedback to themselves; managers triage via push, flagging bad-faith claims. One piece of laminated paper, three problems gone. We asked: what would it look like to design a conversational assistant that could manage devices and help non-experts solve issues? Video: [Stella interface overview](https://work.nickheise.com/images/stella-02.mp4) ## For Admins: Ask instead of navigate Instead of hunting through nested menus, users ask Stella for help using natural language prompts—making device management accessible to non-experts. MobiControl is SOTI's enterprise Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform. It's used by global retailers, logistics networks, healthcare systems, and field teams to deploy apps, enforce security, and manage devices at scale. ### Troubleshoot with natural language Ask Stella about any issue in plain language. No technical expertise required. ![Troubleshoot with natural language](https://work.nickheise.com/images/stella-natural-language.webp) ### Run complex actions with a single command From deploying apps to enforcing security policies, Stella handles complex workflows with simple instructions. ![Run complex actions with a single command](https://work.nickheise.com/images/stella-complex.webp) ### Smart suggestions before problems escalate Stella surfaces relevant logs and context proactively, helping teams catch issues early. ![Smart suggestions before problems escalate](https://work.nickheise.com/images/stella-suggestions.webp) ## My Role: How I shaped the outcome My role blended both strategy and execution. I designed the full UI and brand through rapid, iterative cycles, establishing core flows first and validating with quick prototypes. I created Stella's brand from scratch, including the logo, color system, iconography, and graphical language, making it intentionally distinct from the broader MobiControl ecosystem while remaining cohesive. I partnered directly with executive leadership to clarify the vision, define scope, and position Stella within the company's long-term strategy. Day to day, I collaborated closely with the development team and responded to feedback in real time. ### Strategy and execution Designed the full UI and brand through rapid, iterative cycles with a short timeline and continuous feedback loops. ![Strategy and execution](https://work.nickheise.com/images/stella-03.webp) ### Brand creation from scratch Logo, color system, iconography, and graphical language—intentionally distinct from the broader MobiControl ecosystem. ![Brand creation from scratch](https://work.nickheise.com/images/stella-brand.webp) ## The Outcome: Built to stand apart With a focus on clear type, thoughtful copy, and modern design, Stella became a simple and striking interface that made the monotony of device management clear and accessible. Stella has since become a key differentiator for SOTI's enterprise platform, launching to positive reception across retail, logistics, healthcare, and field service teams. ### Understand logs without being an expert Stella translates complex device logs into clear, actionable summaries almost anyone can understand. ### Instant answers for any device issue Real-time responses across any device type in your fleet, available whenever teams need them. ### A distinct brand identity A cohesive visual language built to stand apart from MobiControl while complementing the broader ecosystem. ### Validated through rapid prototyping Core flows were tested and refined quickly, keeping the team aligned and moving fast under tight timelines. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is Stella? Canonical URL: https://work.nickheise.com/project/fusion Author: Nick Heise (Product Design Leader) Back to portfolio: https://work.nickheise.com/ (markdown: https://work.nickheise.com/index.md) Tags: analytics, enterprise A retail analytics platform by The Home Depot that helps suppliers spot risk early, understand performance, and act with confidence. The goal was to help anyone become more informed about data. ![Fusion retail analytics platform](https://work.nickheise.com/images/fusion.webp) [Live product](https://askuity.com/) ## At a glance - Launch: 2023 (Platform relaunch) - Platform: Web (Browser-native) - Project span: 5 yrs (Complete rebuild) - Sprint cadence: 2-week (Continuous integration) ## The Platform: Designing clarity at enterprise scale Suppliers have access to an enormous amount of data but very little help understanding what should matter to them in the moment. The goal wasn't more charts, it was to help suppliers become proactive, data-driven partners to merchandising teams at The Home Depot. Video: [Fusion overview dashboard](https://work.nickheise.com/images/askuity.mp4) ## For Suppliers: Provide insight, not just information Fusion's home experience gives users an immediate sense of business health: what changed last week, where risk is emerging, and what deserves their attention. My team and I leveraged product analytics from Pendo to see how suppliers actually used Fusion. We let data guide how and where business health showed up in the product. ### A real-time snapshot of business health See what changed, where risk is emerging, and what deserves attention—all on the home experience. ![A real-time snapshot of business health](https://work.nickheise.com/images/thd-03.webp) ### AI-driven alerts for anomalies and risk Surface what matters now so suppliers can act before issues compound. ![AI-driven alerts for anomalies and risk](https://work.nickheise.com/images/thd-05.webp) ### Smart dashboards generated from insights Alerts open into auto-generated dashboards that explain the why and what to explore next. ![Smart dashboards generated from insights](https://work.nickheise.com/images/thd-04.webp) ### Shared dashboards and exports Templates, shared views, and exportable data turn analysis into a team activity rather than an individual task. ![Shared dashboards and exports](https://work.nickheise.com/images/thd-06.webp) ## My Role: Re-architecting both the product and the system behind it I worked on Fusion for 5 years. The most recent iteration reflects a deliberate pivot halfway through. Eventually it was clear the original version couldn't scale in the ways a modern product needed to. I conceived and helped pitch a new direction internally. The new path aimed to align teams around a clearer UX architecture that could support growth, AI-driven features, and evolving customer needs. ### Strategy and execution Led design through a major platform pivot, balancing long-term vision with practical, two-week shipping cadence. ![Strategy and execution](https://work.nickheise.com/images/fusion-03.webp) ### A modular, modern foundation Reimagined Fusion as a more dynamic platform built on a modern stack, capable of supporting AI-driven features. ![A modular, modern foundation](https://work.nickheise.com/images/fusion-01.webp) ### System-level decisions Introduced dashboard-level filters and consistent patterns that improved usability across every view. ![System-level decisions](https://work.nickheise.com/images/fusion-05.webp) ### Continuous learning Released every two weeks, learned directly from users, and adjusted quickly when something wasn't working. ![Continuous learning](https://work.nickheise.com/images/fusion-04.webp) ## The Outcome: Focused, flexible, built to evolve After a complete redesign, Fusion shipped with a clearer architecture, smarter defaults, and AI capabilities that helped suppliers move from reactive to proactive. The platform now serves as a foundation for ongoing investment in AI-driven retail analytics. The overhaul proves that thoughtful architecture and modern shipping cadence can coexist within enterprise constraints. ### Suppliers pivoted from reactive to proactive Suppliers now routinely spot risk earlier and act on emerging trends before they become problems. ### Anomaly detection in plain language Using data science + AI, Fusion translates noisy data into clear, actionable summaries non-experts can use. ### Consistency across the platform Dashboard-level filters and shared patterns mean less re-learning and more confident users. ### A foundation for what's next My team and I created a modular system designed to grow with the business and absorb new AI capabilities. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is Fusion? Fusion is Askuity's retail analytics platform, owned by The Home Depot. It helps suppliers understand performance, spot risk early, and act with confidence using shared dashboards, AI-driven alerts, and exportable insights. ### Who uses Fusion? Vendors and suppliers selling products through The Home Depot use Fusion to monitor sales, inventory, and operational health, and to collaborate with merchandising teams. ### What was your role on Fusion? I led design on Fusion for roughly five years, including a major mid-project pivot that re-architected the platform onto a modern, modular tech stack. I shaped UX architecture, system-level patterns, and AI-driven features. ### What does the AI in Fusion actually do? Fusion uses AI to detect anomalies, summarize what changed, and auto-generate dashboards from alerts—so users immediately understand why something happened and what to explore next. ### When did Fusion launch? Video: [ResQ work order overview](https://work.nickheise.com/images/resq-apps.mp4) ## For Operators: A calmer way to handle emergencies ResQ approached the product as a systems problem, not just a service problem. The goal wasn't to eliminate emergencies, but to give operators a calmer, more predictable way to handle them. Work orders can be submitted in seconds, tracked in real time, and resolved with clear accountability across restaurants and vendors. ### Request and manage repairs in one place Submit work orders in seconds and track them end-to-end without juggling calls, texts, and emails. ![Request and manage repairs in one place](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?0) ### Coordinate with trusted service providers A vetted network of vendors keeps quality high and reduces the time spent finding the right help. ![Coordinate with trusted service providers](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?1) ### Approve and pay invoices in-app Approvals, payments, and documentation live with the work order—no paper trail to chase down. ![Approve and pay invoices in-app](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?2) ### See spend and operational health clearly Preventative maintenance and reporting give operators visibility into what's working and what's costing them. ![See spend and operational health clearly](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?3) ## My Role: How the work came together As Product Design Lead, my role sat at the intersection of product, brand, and strategy. We were a small, fast-moving team, and design was embedded directly in how decisions were made. I designed and helped ship two mobile apps in parallel: one for restaurants and one for vendors. Much of the work happened live, under real constraints, with shifting priorities. There was a constant tension between what had to be done now and what we could improve later. I worked to create a visual language that felt modern, confident, and credible. I rethought the logo, typography, color system, and UI patterns. I oversaw the team to ensure they carried those decisions consistently through every surface. ### Two mobile apps in parallel Designed and shipped restaurant- and vendor-facing apps simultaneously, balancing two distinct user needs. ![Two mobile apps in parallel](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?4) ### Brand and product, together Rebuilt the visual language—logo, typography, color, UI patterns—to establish trust on both sides of the marketplace. ![Brand and product, together](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?5) ### Embedded in strategy Sat at the intersection of product, brand, and strategy on a small team where design influenced direction. ![Embedded in strategy](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?6) ### Grounded in field research Conducted research with restaurant operators and vendors that shaped flows from work orders to invoice approvals. ![Grounded in field research](https://work.nickheise.com/images/placeholder.svg?7) ## The Outcome: A flexible foundation built to scale The result wasn't a perfectly polished system on day one—but it was a strong, flexible foundation that scaled with the business and helped carry ResQ through its next stage of growth and successful Series A. ### Trust was designed into the brand A modern, credible visual language helped operators and vendors feel confident on the platform. ### Speed without chaos Work orders, approvals, and payments live together so urgent issues feel manageable, not frantic. ### A foundation for growth Patterns and systems that scaled with the team as ResQ expanded its product surface and customer base. ### Two sides, one product A unified design system serving restaurants and vendors with experiences tailored to each. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is ResQ? ResQ is a facilities management platform that helps restaurants manage repairs, maintenance, vendors, and invoices in one place. It's a two-sided marketplace serving both operators and the service providers who keep their kitchens running. ### Who uses ResQ? Restaurant operators use ResQ to submit and track work orders, manage preventative maintenance, and approve invoices. Vendors use it to receive jobs, communicate with customers, and get paid. ### What was your role on ResQ? I was Product Design Lead from 2018–2020, leading design across two mobile apps and the web platform. My work spanned product, brand, and strategy on a small, fast-moving team of roughly 10–15 people. ### What kinds of problems does ResQ solve? It replaces the messy mix of phone calls, texts, emails, and paper invoices that historically plagued restaurant repairs. It gives operators visibility, accountability, and cost control while connecting them to vetted vendors. ### When was ResQ built? The work covered here was completed during my time at ResQ from 2018 to 2020, including the platform pivot, brand rebuild, and launch of the restaurant and vendor mobile apps. ## See ResQ in action Learn how ResQ is helping restaurants and vendors run repair and maintenance with less friction.
